1. Casual clothes
Stay comfortable while exploring by packing casual clothes. Choose clothes that can be mixed and matched together and easily dressed up or down to suit the occasion. Most people find they don’t wear half the clothes that they pack, so keep it light.
is known for its ever changing weather so pack for all weather conditions by choosing clothes that you can layer together, especially in spring and autumn. In summer, you may still need a jumper and a light jacket and don’t forget a sunhat and sunglasses. If you are travelling during the winter months, be well prepared with a good coat, gloves, scarves, hats, thick socks and water-resistant footwear as there might be snow.
There will be a few opportunities to get dressed up during your journey such as the Welcome Gala Dinner or a Viennese evening concert, so you may wish to bring a dressier outfit but formal or cocktail outfit is not required. A dress or smart casual shirt and trousers will suffice.
We offer four items of laundry a day so depending on your cruise length, usually more is less when it comes to packing.
2. Comfortable walking shoes
You will find walking through the cities and towns of Europe much more enjoyable with a good pair of shoes. Make sure you have worn your shoes in prior to travelling and choose shoes that have a good grip. Many towns and cities in Europe have cobblestones, so your footwear choice needs to have a good grip to avoid slipping.
3. A day bag
When you are out and about discovering new sights, make sure you have a light day bag, such as a belt bag, small backpack or handbag, for your daily necessities. Emerald Waterways include a backpack for you to use if you don’t already have one at home.
4. Swimwear and active wear
Don’t forget your swim wear and exercise clothes so that you can take advantage of our indoor heated pool

If you require medication, make sure you check with your doctor before you depart to ensure you have all the personal medication that you require. There are plenty of pharmacies around Europe; however please bring your scripts with you and be prepared with the medication that you may require.
6. Passport plus copies and travel documents
Don’t forget your passport before leaving for the airport. Make copies of important documents such as travel insurance, visas (if required) and travel itineraries. You may also like to email your documents to a family member or friend in case of an emergency.
7. Local currency
The majority of countries in Europe use the Euro, however some countries such as the UK, Scandinavia and Hungary have their own currencies. Although most things are included in the price of your Emerald European river cruise, you may want some additional cash for shopping or snacks and drinks when you are on shore. We recommend you exchange your currency before you travel.
8. Universal adaptor
Don’t forget universal adaptors to charge your electrical appliances. Plug sockets differ from the UK to other parts of Europe so pack one that you can use throughout Europe. If you have a few different electrical appliances or devices you may also like to consider bringing a double adaptor.
9. Camera, batteries and memory card
If you don’t like taking pictures with a smartphone then bring your camera to capture your memories of all the amazing places you will visit. Also remember to carry spare batteries and memory card.
10. Sense of fun and adventure
The most important thing is to have a good time. Your European river cruise is a great opportunity to meet new friends, relax and have fun discovering the best of Europe. Travelling is always an adventure and with a great attitude you will be sure to have a fantastic time.
